Connecting Communities with Essential Veterinary Care
Brooke Pakistan is working with animal health providers, veterinary medicine suppliers, and government livestock stakeholders to improve access to essential veterinary medicines for equine-owning communities, particularly in underserved areas.

Significant strides were made in enhancing access to essential veterinary medicines (EVML) for equine-owning communities by strengthening partnerships with Veterinary Medicine Storekeepers, Animal Health Providers (AHPs), and the Livestock and Dairy Development Department. Throughout the year, Brooke facilitated over 440 linkage meetings, engaging storekeepers and AHPs to ensure the availability of multispecies oral antibiotics and analgesics, which are critical for reducing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and improving animal health outcomes. Additionally, more than 130 regional-level meetings were conducted with government livestock directors to advocate for the inclusion of these essential medicines in provincial procurement lists and to support mobile veterinary services in underserved areas, such as brick kilns.

A notable achievement was the national launch of the Essential Veterinary Medicine List (EVML) for food-producing animals, organised in collaboration with the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore. This milestone event, co-chaired by Brooke UK's CEO Chris Wainwright, marked a step forward in formalising veterinary standards across Pakistan. Brooke Pakistan also played a leadership role in EVML Phase 1 in Kenya through the Fleming Fund-supported workshop, contributing expertise to help define standardised medicine lists and promote responsible antimicrobial use. While tangible progress has been made—such as improved availability of oral antibiotics and Phenylbutazone—continued engagement with provincial departments remains crucial to ensure broader access to quality veterinary medicines for equine communities and to institutionalise equid-inclusive veterinary services in public health frameworks.
