Brooke Pakistan – Pakistan's Largest Working Animal Welfare Organization

Creating a Culture of Compassionate Animal Handling

Compassionate Handling is a welfare-centre approach that promotes safe, respectful, and low-stress interactions between people and animals.
Every interaction with a working equine matters. Compassionate handling promotes safe, respectful, and low-stress interactions that can improve animal welfare, behaviour, and the effectiveness of healthcare.

Every interaction with a working equine matters. The way animals are approached, handled, and restrained can significantly influence their welfare, behaviour, and response to healthcare interventions.

Compassionate Handling (CH) is a welfare-centred approach that promotes safe, respectful, and low-stress interactions between people and animals. Through Brooke’s global Compassionate Handling for Life (CH4L) initiative, Brooke teams are strengthening the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of animal health professionals and equine handlers. The aim is to create more positive experiences for animals while improving safety and effectiveness for the people who care for them.

As part of this ongoing commitment, Brooke Pakistan recently facilitated a Compassionate Handling for Life training for Brooke field staff, Veterinary Training Institute (VTI) staff, and professionals from the Livestock Department.

The training combined interactive learning with practical demonstrations, focusing on equine behaviour, humane handling, and welfare-focused healthcare practices. By understanding how equines perceive and respond to human interaction, participants explored practical ways to reduce stress, improve cooperation, and deliver safer and more effective care.

Across Brooke, compassionate handling is being integrated into veterinary services, community engagement, and capacity-building programmes to encourage lasting improvements in animal handling and welfare practices

By investing in the skills of frontline professionals and strengthening collaboration among Brooke field teams, VTI staff, and Livestock Department stakeholders, Brooke Pakistan is helping create an environment where working equines experience more positive human–animal interactions throughout their lives.

These efforts contribute not only to better equine welfare, but also to the safety, livelihoods, and wellbeing of the communities that depend on working equines every day.

Brooke Pakistan is strengthening the skills of field teams, VTI staff, and livestock department professionals through its Compassionate Handling for Life trainings. By building knowledge, practical skills, and collaboration, these efforts are helping create more positive human–animal interactions and better care for working equines.
