When Disaster Strikes, Animals Suffer Too

Floods, droughts, and other natural calamities leave families without shelter, income, or access to basic services, while the working animals they depend on suffer injury, disease, and a lack of food and water. Since these animals are often the household's only source of income and mobility, their survival is directly tied to the family's ability to recover.

Built Over Three Decades

Since its inception in 1991, Brooke Pakistan has been at the forefront of disaster response for equine-owning communities across the country. Recognising the vulnerability of working animals during crises, Brooke has developed rapid response mechanisms to deliver emergency veterinary care, feed, and water during floods, droughts, and other natural calamities.

These interventions have ensured the survival of thousands of animals, safeguarding the livelihoods of families who depend on them.

2005

Earthquake Response

Brooke Pakistan's first major disaster deployment: mobile veterinary relief teams delivered supplies and emergency services to animals injured in the Kashmir earthquake.

2006

Royal Recognition

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, visited Brooke Pakistan’s disaster relief camp in the earthquake-affected areas of northern Pakistan in November 2006, during their official visit to Pakistan. Their visit highlighted Brooke Pakistan’s humanitarian response and its efforts to support communities and working equines affected by the devastating earthquake.

2010 & 2011

Floods Relief Camp

Brooke Pakistan launched a large-scale relief response following the devastating floods of 2010–2011, providing veterinary treatment, feed support and mobile clinics to thousands of horses, donkeys and mules across the worst-affected districts. With an estimated 600,000+ equines impacted by the floods, this vital intervention helped protect the health and welfare of animals and the communities that depended on them.

2020

COVID-19 Pandemic

Brooke Pakistan continued providing emergency feed support and essential veterinary services to working animals throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring that vital care reached animals and their owners even during lockdown restrictions.

2022

Sindh Floods Relief Camp

Brooke Pakistan carried out a two-phase relief and rehabilitation operation in response to the Sindh floods, providing vital support to animals and the communities that depended on them. The efforts were formally recognised by the Livestock & Fisheries Department, Government of Sindh, for the organisation’s services to both animals and people.

2025

KP Floods Relief Camp

Brooke Pakistan continued its disaster response in flood-affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, providing vital support to animals and the communities that depended on them. In recognition of these efforts, the Livestock, Fisheries & Cooperatives Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, awarded Brooke Pakistan a Certificate of Commendation.
